Frank J. Gustin

Frank joined Dart Adamson & Donovan in 2006 and remained Of Counsel until his death in 2012.  During his career, Frank maintained a distinguished and broad practice that included specializations in both family law and oil and gas law.

He graduated from the University of Washington in 1955, where he served as student body president.  In 1958, Frank received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Washington. He was admitted to the Washington State Bar and the United States District Court, District of Washington.  He was a Pierce County prosecutor and was involved in politics while living in the state of Washington.

He returned to Utah in 1961 to practice family law at Gustin & Gustin with his father, Harley W. Gustin, who was a prominent Utah attorney.  In 1961, Frank was admitted to the Utah State Bar and the United States District Court for the District of Utah.

After his father’s death, Frank formed the law firm Gustin, Adams, Kasting & Liapis.  He was general counsel for Equity Oil Company for 38 years where he gained distinction as a top oil and gas attorney.  He was a member of the Salt Lake County Bar Association and served as president of the Senior Bar. Frank supported the Legal Aid Society as well; the Utah State Bar awarded his law firm with the “Pro Bono Work Award”.

Frank was also the president of Law Club, a group of lawyers who met regularly at the Alta Club to review case law and tell “war stories.”

Frank had a keen intellect and was a zealous advocate for his clients. Frank was a friend and mentor to many lawyers throughout his career.  These assets helped him to succeed in and outside the courtroom.

In his personal life, Frank exhibited a remarkable sense of humor.  He loved to sing, play the accordion and entertain his family and friends through stories and poems.  His favorite was “Casey at the Bat.”  He was a 33rd degree Master Mason and was instrumental in the building of the Shriner’s Hospital, which provides free medical care for children in Salt Lake City. He was active in his community and always lent a helping hand to those in need.
